Sundays in November

Hosted by: St Michael's Church and Choir

A Summary of our Sunday Services during November 2017. Traditional liturgy, fine music, friendly fellowship – all welcome, please join us.

A good time for new singers to join the choir as we move towards December’s exciting Advent and Christmas music.

Sunday 19th November, Advent minus 2, Trinity XXIII, 10.45am Mass with Fr Christopher Durrant. Hymns: 418 : 295 : 339. Setting: Mass in C – Nicholson. Motet: Rejoice in the Lord alway – Anon.

Sunday 26th November, Christ the King, 10.45am Mass with Ven David Gunn-Johnson. Hymns: 332 : 345 : 352. Setting: Mass for Four Voices – Byrd. Motet: Above all praise & all majesty – Mendelssohn.

Sunday 5th November, Advent-4, TrinityXXI, 10.45am Sung Mass with Fr Andrew Johnson from the Heavitree team. Hymns: 372 : 311 : 272. Setting: Missa Lauda Sion – Palestrina. No time to rehearse this one owing to Fauré Requiem, so we will sing Viadana’s MIssa L’Hora Passa.  Motet: Ego sum panis vivus – Palestrina. A fine setting of ‘I am the living Bread, come down from heaven; your fathers ate Manna in the wilderness, and died, but who eats this bread shall live for ever’.

6pm Choral Evensong & Benediction. Responses: Radcliffe. Psalms: 148, 150. Office Hymn: 245. Canticles: Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis in F – Dyson. Anthem: Drop, drop slow tears – Gibbons. O salutaris: 269 Tantum Ergo: Fauré in G flat. Each setting of the Magnificat has its own character and, for me, Dyson in F, with its floating Soprano solo, ATB backing group, laid-back organ accompaniment looking for a saxophone stop & brushed cymbals, plus an incense-laden quire, evokes a sacred jazz club, so relax and enjoy tonight’s gently atmospheric music.

Sunday 12th November, Remembrance Sunday, with Act of Remembrance. Trinity XXII, 10.45am Mass with Rev David James. Hymns: 417 : 354 : 488 : 489(v1-2). Setting: Mass in the Phrygian mode – Wood. Motet: For the Fallen – Graham Keitch.
