The Feast of the Assumption of Mary

Hosted by: St Michael & All Angels

The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven is celebrated each year on 15th August.

This year this major Feast Day falls on a Sunday and will be celebrated with Mass at 11:00am, with Fr Robin Eastoe, former Vicar of Heavitree Parish.

Readings for Feast of the Assumption are here.

Parish Service & Notices are here.

The word “assumption” comes from the Middle English “assumpcioun” which means “a taking up into heaven”, and from Latin “assumptio” which means “a taking”.

Please note, Covid-19 precautions remain in line with current Church & Government guidelines, with Communion (wafer only) brought to the pews.

Below are historical notes about how the community and choir of St Michael’s has celebrated this Feast Day in recent years. The Pewsheet (currently for last year) is linked from the green ribbon below.

In 2019 we went to Mary Tavy near Tavistock to sing for this Feast with their Curate Fr Steve Martin and Canon Chris Palmer of Exeter Cathedral.

In 2016 the Church of St Michael & All Angels celebrated this Feast, of the Assumption into Heaven of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the end of her earthly life, on Monday 15th August with a Solemn Sung Mass at 7.30pm. Missa “Dixit Maria” by Hans Leo Haßler and Motet “Ave Maria” attributed to Jacob Arcadelt.

In 2015 the Feast was transferred to Sunday 16th August with Solemn Sung Mass at 10.45am; the Setting was the beautiful Mass for Four Voices by William Byrd, and the Motet a setting of “Ave Maria gratia plena” attributed to the 16th century Flemish composer Jacob Arcadelt.

In 2012 on a Choir trip abroad, we celebrated this glorious Feast with the Choir & congregation of Fulda Cathedral, Hesse, Germany.
