Exeter Chorale, directed by Dr Nigel Browne, return to St Michael’s with a Tea-time Concert at 4.30pm on Sunday 11th December. We welcome Mr John Draisey as our accompanist, and some guest instrumentalists.
Our working title is “AQUA MUSICALE”, i.e. a Concert with a watery theme.
Songs by Byrd, Parry, Stanford, Tippett and others feature Lakes, River, Sand, Sea, Storm, Sailors and a Mermaid.
Motets range from the flowing “Sicut Cervus” (Like as the Hart desireth the waterbrooks) by Palestrina and a delightful “Ave Maris Stella” (Hail Star of the Sea) by Rheinberger, to a couple of stormy Baroque items by Eybler and Graupner (contemporaries of Mozart & JSBach respectively).
All this is accompanied by Home-made Cakes and Tea or Coffee, while you enjoy the beauty of St Michael’s Church on a Winter’s afternoon. Interestingly, Mount Dinham was developed by the eponymous Exeter Tea Merchant John Dinham (1788-1864), so we imagine he would approve of this musical brew.
Admission is £8 on the door (including Programme and Refreshments); Children free.
The same Concert is also being performed at St Nicholas Methodist Church, Fore Street, Topsham, EX3 0HE at 7.30pm on Thursday 8th December, if that is more convenient.
