2019 Music Hymns 21: 57: 186. Missa Brevissima, by Casciolini. Ave Maria, by Arcadelt.

Music for 2016 was Mass in the Phrygian Mode by Charles Wood (1866-1926). Motet “Anna mater Matris Christi” by 15th century composer John Plummer (c.1410-83) who flourished in the reign of Henry VI. This hymn to St Anne, mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary, acknowledges her special position as mother of the Mother of Christ.

Music for 2015 was:- Setting: Missa “Ave Maris Stella” by Victoria. Motet changed to: “Alma Mater Redemptoris” by Palestrina; copies of the intended “Prope est Dominus” by Michael Haydn, from the Gradual for Advent IV, were not as “prope- nigh” as we thought! The Lord is nigh unto them that call upon Him; yea, all such as call upon Him faithfully.

Music for 2014 was:- Setting: Missa “Dixit Maria” by Hans Leo Haßler (1564-1612). Born in Nürnberg and studying with the Gabrielis in Venice, he was a renowned and innovative composer and organist working also in Augsburg and Dresden. One of the love songs written around 1600 by Haßler became the tune used by Bach and others for the Passion Chorale “O sacred head, sore wounded”. And Motet: Hymne à la Vierge by Pierre Villette (1926-1998) to a poem of Roland Bouhéret (1930-1995). We move to 1950s France with lush harmonies and high Catholic devotion to the Virgin Mary, presenting her as almost co-Creator with the Holy Trinity.

O beautiful Virgin Mary, In God your soul discovers perfect love.
It cloaks you with the mantle of Grace like a betrothed adorned with her jewels.

Alleluia, alleluia. I will sing your praise, Lord, for you have looked after me,
for you have covered me with the veil of innocence,
for you have made me before the day, for you have made me go before the gushing of fountains.

You were born before the hills, O wisdom of God, the way to salvation.
Happy is he who walks in your footsteps, who prepares his heart to listen to your advice.

You were present before the stars, Mother of the Creator, in the very depths of heaven.
When God was creating the world, working with Him, you shared His heart.
