Choral Evensong – June

Hosted by: St Michael's Church and Choir

Please join us on Sunday 5 June at 6pm for Choral Evensong & Benediction.

Responses – Herbert Sumsion (1899-1995); Psalm 44; Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in D – Herbert Brewer (1865-1928).  Sumsion succeeded Brewer as Organist of Gloucester Cathedral, and both were involved in the Three Choirs Festival for many years.

The Organist’s choice of Anthem is Evening Hymn, Te lucis ante terminum, composed in 1908 by Balfour Gardiner, who studied in Frankfurt as well as at the Royal College of Music under C V Stanford. Click the link for an interesting Blog on the words of the Evening Hymn by “A Clerk of Oxford”.

“Choral Evensong” is not a tautology but indicates that most of the music will be sung by the choir and shared aurally with the congregation. In “Evensong” both choir and congregation sing together, while Evensong is “Said” if there are not the resources to sing it. The Choir practices from 4.45pm and experienced singers are welcome to join us.

Benediction will be led by Fr Jolyon Seward from Heavitree Parish, and we will sing the Hymns by St Thomas Aquinas to the traditional Plainsong.
