Sunday 26th January 2020, Sung Mass at 11am, with Celebrant Fr Nigel Guthrie and Preacher Reader Howard Friend. The Gospel Reading is the Call of the first Disciples of Jesus.
Hymns: 36: 302: 57. Setting: Mass in F, by Charles Wood (rather than Darke). Motet: Sicut Cervus, by Palestrina – Like as the Deer desires brooks of water, so longs my soul after Thee O God. (replacing Beati Quorum Via, by Stanford – Blessed arre they whose way is integrity, who walk in the law of the Lord.)
A reminder that Saturday 25th January, is the Year’s Mind, anniversary of death in 2015, of our beloved Canon John Thurmer – May he rest in peace.
It is also the Feast of the Conversion of St Paul, the conclusion of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, and indeed Burns’ Night when we honour Scotland’s national poet.
In 2016 we sang all 3 Byrd Masses on successive Sundays. The three Masses written around 1592-5 by William Byrd (1540-1623) for Catholics meeting in secret are all in the repertoire of St Michael’s Choir. Today we sang the Mass for Five Voices, and as our Motet Byrd’s exciting 6-part “Sing joyfully to God our strength” from Psalm 81.
