Hosted by: St Michael's Church and Choir

Completing the current Music List with more Sundaes after Trinity.

Sunday 20th August Trinity X. 10.45am Mass. Hymns: 353 : 273 : 366. Setting: Missa Aeterna Christi Munera, by Palestrina (1525-94; published 1590). Motet: O Lord Increase our Faith, by Loosemore (1600-70). Celebrant & preacher Fr Nigel Mason, Hospiscare chaplain.

Sunday 27th August Trinity XI. 10.45am Mass. Hymns: 467 : 297 : 272. Setting: Mass in F, and Motet: Holy is the True Light, both by Sir William Harris (1883-1973). Celebrant & preacher Fr Nigel Mason, Hospiscare chaplain.
Holy is the true light was composed around 1947 in memory of Evelyn Ley, the wife of his friend and colleague Henry Ley, Precentor of Eton College.
Holy is the True Light, and passing wonderful, lending radiance to them that endured in the heat of the conflict,
From Christ they inherit a home of unfading splendour, wherein they rejoice with gladness evermore. Alleluia!

Sunday 13th August Trinity IX kept as Feast of the Assumption. 10.45am Sung Mass. Hymns: 184 : 185 : 186. Setting: MIssa Ave Maris Stella, by Victoria (1548-1611). Motet: Ave Maria, by Parsons (1530-72). Celebrant & preacher Fr Christopher Durrant. Good to have Rev Alison Whiting in our Procession.
Today’s Mass setting is based on the Marian plainsong Hymn ‘Ave maris stella’, a truly lovely work that Victoria first published in 1576. It’s for four parts (SATB) in transposed Dorian mode – which equates to G Minor,
Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum; benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Parsons’ setting utilises the shorter version of the text, just Luke 1:28, that was prevalent before the additional words (Sancta Maria etc./Holy Mary etc.) appended by St Petrus Canisius in the catechism instigated by the Council of Trent in 1566.
