John Thurmer Memorial Lecture 2017

Hosted by: St Michael's Lectures - Dr Bruce Coleman

Thursday 1st June at 7.45pm we are privileged to welcome Dr Bruce Coleman, who will distil his extensive knowledge of Victorian Church History to give a lecture in memory of Canon John Thurmer, entitled “The Oxford Movement in Church and Society.”

[Please note also that the Ashes of Canon John Thurmer will be interred in St Mary Steps Church, Exeter, on the same day, Thurs 1 June, at 12 noon.]

Dr Bruce Coleman is a Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Exeter, with a long and distinguished academic career in the fields of Victorian political, urban & religious history.  We are delighted that he has agreed to give this second John Thurmer Memorial Lecture.

Revd John Alfred Thurmer (31 Dec 1925 -  25 Jan 2015) was Canon Emeritus of Exeter Cathedral and Honorary Assistant Priest of the Parish of St David’s with St Michael & All Angels, Exeter. He came to Exeter in 1964 to be Lazenby Chaplain to the University, with part-time History teaching. From 1973 to 1991 he was a residentiary Canon of Exeter Cathedral. In retirement he served St David’s and more especially St Michael’s as a faithful Priest through pastoral work, lively preaching, liturgical knowledge and hospitality.
