CBS Mass – St Martin of Tours

Hosted by: St Michael & All Angels

In place of Tuesday Vespers, at 6pm, CBS Mass in commemoration of St Martin, Bishop of Tours (397).

His shrine in France became a famous stopping-point for pilgrims on the road to Spain.  As he was born in what is now Hungary, spent much of his childhood in Pavia, Italy, and lived most of his adult life in France, he is considered a spiritual bridge across Europe.

His life was recorded by a contemporary hagiographer, Sulpicius Severus. The best known legend is Martin using his military sword to cut his cloak in two, and give half to a beggar clad only in rags in the depth of winter. Conscripted as a soldier’s son into the Roman Army, he eventually found life as a soldier incompatible with the Christian faith he had adopted, became an early conscientious objector, and was released from military service.
